Chapter Ten

When the crazy woman walked out of her boss’ office as if she had attended an afternoon high tea and crumpets with the ladies, Mia held her judgement in check. Whatever she and Noah were going through, it was none of her damn business. Still, as the woman waited by the elevator, she grew more and more restless. The unignorable sound of her heels on the marble was being drilled into Mia’s brain.

In a snap judgement, she rolled her eyes and crossed the room to the elevator banks located around the corner from her desk.

“Is everything okay, ma’am? Do you need anything before you leave?”

Lydia licked her lips and looked at Mia as if she were some big, bad bear in the woods that had stumbled across her path. Far from the raving, irate woman who had done battle over her office desk. Certainly not someone who had needed a security guard called into the situation. What gives, she wondered. The woman was silent, her eyes roving around the room.

Okay, so she would try again. Though, truthfully, she didn’t even know why she was bothering in the first place. This drama really wasn’t her problem. Yet, she couldn’t do the whole “leave another woman out in the cold” thing. She had looked rough while inside Noah’s office.

Plus, Mia couldn’t pretend that she hadn’t seen the whole fight go down through the transparent glass. She was a good actor, but not that good. The woman who had walked out of the boss’ office looking like it was no big deal, was shell shocked and huddled into herself now that she was out of sight. Jesus, this was completely out of her jurisdiction. Nowhere on her resume did it list Client Therapist. But if it would make Mr. Windsor’s life a little easier, maybe it would be worth it. Get him to lay off of her for half a second.

“It’s okay, you can talk to me. Everything will stay between us girls. Girl code, right?” Mia coaxed with a gentle smile, folding her hands in front of her abdomen and trying to look non-threatening. “Let me help you.”

“You…don’t even know me. Why?” Lydia shuffled from foot to foot, her brow furrowing like a child who’d had a nightmare and couldn’t understand the problem. “I shouldn’t really trust anyone right now. Everything’s gone to shit.”

The curse word sounded odd coming from the other woman’s lips, but Mia was impressed. She didn’t think “ladies of breeding” talked like that at all. Maybe she could understand this woman a little better.

“I’m not going to lie to you and say that I didn’t see anything. You know I saw everything. Even if I tried to look away,
